Think... Orlando Bloom circa 1160, with agnostic leanings. And a mean shield punch.
(Okay, in a weird hybrid movie-canon and reality-canon, if reality can be said to have a canon, Balian is the heir of Geoffrey of Ibelin, acknowledged son and heir, and spent his first eight or so years in France and has lived out the rest of his seventeen years in the fief of Ibelin in what is now Palestine, enjoying the best that money and influence can buy. Why? Because I say so.)
